Asalha Puja (Dhamma Day)
The day of the Buddha's first teaching, and the eve of the rains retreat.
What it is, and when it falls
The full moon of July.
Asalha Puja marks the first discourse — the moment the teaching was first spoken to another person, and so the moment the Dhamma entered the world.
It falls the day before Vassa begins, and the two are kept as one movement: the teaching given, then three months of putting it into practice.
Why it matters
This is the teaching community's own day. If Vesak is about the person who found the path, Asalha Puja is about the path being handed on — which is the only reason anyone else can walk it.
