The observance rhythm
Our calendar keeps an old rhythm. The weekly talks mark the weeks; the lunar observance days mark the fortnights, as they have for twenty-five centuries; the rains retreat marks the year's still season; and the celebrations mark the turning of the year itself. A community's calendar is a confession of what it values — read ours and you will know us.
The uposatha — observance day falls each fortnight, at the full and new moon. Vassa — the rains retreat is the three-month period when monastics settle in one place; it ends with kaṭhina — the robe offering, when the community offers cloth for new robes. Each of these is open to anyone, and explained on the day for those who are new. See Spiritual Events for what each one means and how it runs.
